The urinary system is an imperative part in the functioning of the body. This system houses the kidneys, bladder, urethra, ureters and penis (in males), and is responsible for producing, storing and purging urine from the body. Of course, it is an area that runs a high risk of infections and disorders due to its “job”.

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) are possibly the most common in the urinary system. One of frequent and severe significance is an infection of the bladder, which can become quite dangerous if spreads to the kidneys. This infection is most commonly treated with fluids and antibiotics.

Cystitis (Cyst = Bladder, Itis = Inflammation) is also a common UTI, more so in women than men and will normally occur at least once in a woman’s lifetime. This inflammation of the bladder is usually caused by sexual intercourse, E. coli or a Staph infection. The treatment for cystitis can usually just be an antibiotic that will be used over the course of three to seven days.

Another common UTI is urinary incontinence, which is the loss of bladder control. This condition can range from minor loss of urine while sneezing or laughing, to complete bladder loss due to a sudden urge to urinate. However, this condition has become quite easy to control with muscle exercises such as Kegels (which focuses on bladder muscles), lifestyle changes and/or medical treatment.

Though this is provided to increase one’s knowledge on any urinary problems or concerns you may be having. It is always recommended to contact your physician or nurse practitioner if you are experiencing any symptoms related to your urinary system. I do not recommend self diagnosis and it is imperative to seek medical treatment as soon as possible, to avoid causing serious damage to your urinary tract!
